This hymn is so well-known and justly so. Isaac Watts uses such beautiful poetic language to describe the depths of Christ’s love for us in his sacrifice on the cross. As we look on this scene, the only response can be to leave our life of personal gain and follow Christ wholeheartedly.
The tune tries to capture this sense of awe and amazement at the sacrifice made. With the simple rhythm and chord progressions, it has a monastic quality – humbly bowing before our Saviour and King.
