The Nunc Dimittis is also known as the Song of Simeon and takes the verses from Luke 2:29 – 32. Here Simeon looks at the baby Jesus and realises he is the long-awaited Messiah to save the people from their sins, both Jew and Gentile. As part of the tradition in the book of Common prayer, the doxology is added to this, giving praise to the Trinity.
