In the summer, a composer needs to start thinking about Christmas and whether a new carol could be in the offing. Having collaborated with Ally Barrett of Jubilate hymn writers in the past, I asked her whether she could write a new text for a carol. This carol would go beyond the baby in the manger but take us on a journey through his ministry, death, resurrection and coming again. Ally kindly accepted the challenge and ‘King of kings’ was born. The rhythmic aspect of the text lended itself to a certain musical interpretation. The result was choir plus jazz quartet accompaniment ! Although not your normal accompaniment to a carol, I think it is refreshing to give this contemporary feel. See below the Dundonald Church choir just having recorded their part. The final release will be in early December with both audio and video versions planned ! It will be available on all the usual streaming platforms.
